'Note to Self: A Brief Collection of Reminders'

These tracks were recorded in the backseat of my minivan between May 7th and May 11th, 2022, as I made my way from California to New Mexico. I recorded it at two campgrounds, a rest stop, a military base, and several residential streets. All around the van, a weeks-long windstorm was fueling catastrophic fires across the Southwest. Sometimes you can hear the wind tap tap tapping against my rear window.

1.
when the world comes right up to your doorstep with a litany of sorrows, what do you do? grieving each one is so relentless, and how much crying can one girl do? but did you know that before everything we were nothing? just emptiness, mingled and touching and some say that all this distance really means nothing just mirrors reflecting back to the beginning oh, I find it quite exciting that our universe keeps dividing somewhere else I’m already dying somewhere else the seas aren’t rising and if every possibility is happening concurrently then one of them must be just fine
2.
how am I supposed to sleep with all this noise outside? how am I to find my way back into this dream of mine? when I was almost flying like a landslide into a sky awash with stars the screeching reached me through the ether threw me back in bed and now it’s gone from me only gravity pulling me down oh, I’m a child again sun pouring in please don’t make me join this day gentle sister Steller’s Jay I hope you’ll understand I’m not ready to begin again
3.
4.
Same Old 00:30
I did it again burnt my finger on the end of your cigarette and I watched it burn down still thinking you might come back around
5.
Dogwood 02:23
bloodshed on the news again I turned away ever the fairweather friend they said a hundred and thirty nine dead twenty seven children as I lay in bed yesterday I sat with the Dogwood asking her what good is muscle when the will is weak? all these men armored and broken costumed children making bombs and governments but I paid my taxes today I had them wired away and forged into guns
6.
How 02:07
how did they get you? was it power, damnation, or shame? is that all it takes to impress you? while your love is burning at the stake I’ve been searching I keep digging but I can’t find it no forgiving a coward you know, we’re all afraid so buy salvation by the pound hear us burning don’t make a sound
7.
8.
do you forget so easily? time is not what it seems not barreling towards an ending just circling, winding, entangling oh, but it’s the strangest thing all this human being conjuring and refusing confusion I keep choosing do you forget so easily? everything is touching everything drop a stone, watch it rippling touch a wound back to the beginning oh, but it’s the strangest thing a portal to my undoing touch a wound back to the beginning recursion unraveling and mending

about

\\\ Each album download includes a lyric booklet pdf///

I wrote these songs in the Strange Years, 2020 - 2021, thanks to a delightful and unexpectedly fruitful song club/friendship between Stelth Ulvang, Nick Jaina, and me.

The tracks were mastered graciously by Bart Budwig. The cover photo is from Bobby Cochran, and I would never have gotten the booklet together without the help of Rachel Simon Stark.

about

Aviva le Fey Oakland, California

Aviva sings heart songs – some for love lost, and others for humanity lost – with a tone and cadence that somehow conjures both the vintage pop of the Fifties and the dark, dreamy sounds you might hear coming from that haunted backwoods bar in 1990s Twin Peaks, Washington. ... more
